The Breakaway Siberians Sled Team

“Pets first and athletes second!” Our team is made up of rescues.

To say the Breakaway Siberians aren’t traditional sled dogs is a tremendous understatement – the are “Pets First, and Athletes Second” Learn more about how our team of rescued Siberian huskies from Missouri is defying the odds and finding success in multiple ways.

Our team is based in Hillsboro, Missouri, and Breakaway Kennels is a mid-distance racing sled dog kennel. The majority of our racing dogs have been adopted from rescue groups around the Midwest.

We also visit schools to provide a unique educational experience about sled dogs and racing. Our presentations are very entertaining and highly interactive with our racing dogs.

SPEZZA

The “original” Breakaway Siberian. Koivu’s high energy and passion for running is what drove him to start a sled dog team.

Fleury

The first adopted Breakaway Siberian. Fleury found his calling in education, he loved visiting schools to help spread our message of teamwork and positivity.

The all around best Breakaway Siberian. Spezza holds every record possible when it comes to running with the team.

Balto

The natural born leader. Mandy came from Texas and had a big personality. Her swagger and confidence were unmatched as she quickly found her position as a lead dog alongside Koivu.

Chara

The Breakaway Siberian who claimed an early retirement. Chara stayed at Richie’s parent’s house while they were on vacation. She liked being an only dog so much she decided to take up residence there.

Balto is the reverse version of Chara. He belonged to Leah’s older sister, but then after staying at our house he decided he didn’t want to return! He’s been a part of the family ever since!

Mikko

Roenick’s two passions in life are running and eating - in no particular order.

Cookie is a beat to her own drum kind of girl. She’s equal parts grumpy and sassy, it’s best to stay on her good side!

Mikko is Koivu’s biological little sister. She loves her canine and human family and is often referred to as “the glue” that holds the team together.

Marleau

Backes is a bit guarded because of his past before joining the team. Once he opens up, you can expect all the kisses in the world from this tough guy!

Bure

Bure is our houdini dog, she often escapes from her crate without leaving a clue as to how she got out!

Marleau is often referred to as “the last puppy.” She was adopted as a puppy and was so naughty that we swore to never adopt another Siberian puppy. It’s a promise we have kept!

Juneau

Kaiya is probably our best athlete of all time. She is full of confidence and loves to run fast! She quickly worked her way into the leader position and has never looked back!

Yashin is a playful guy who loves to find mischief. If you are watching him closely, he’s the best dog in the world. But turn your back and he’s quickly up to no good!

Teemu is a shot in the arm of energy! This boy loves to run and play hard! He’s evolving into one of our better leaders on the sled dog team!
